Traditional analogue joystick modules use physical potentiometers to measure stick position. These components can wear over time and are one of the causes of analogue stick drift.

Hall Effect joysticks use magnetic sensing to determine stick position. This removes the conventional resistive potentiometer contact used for positional sensing and can reduce wear associated with that part of the joystick mechanism.

Hall Effect sticks still require correct installation and calibration, and no joystick technology can guarantee that a controller will never develop another fault. However, they can provide a useful alternative for customers who regularly use their DualSense controller and want to upgrade the analogue sticks while having the controller repaired.

Stick Drift Repair vs Thumbstick Replacement

Stick drift and damaged rubber thumbsticks are two different faults.

The analogue joystick module is an electronic/mechanical component soldered to the controller circuit board. A fault with this component can cause unwanted movement or inaccurate analogue input.

The thumbstick is the external plastic and rubber part that your thumb physically rests on.

If the rubber thumbstick is worn or damaged but the controller does not suffer from stick drift, you may only require a thumbstick replacement. If the controller has stick drift, select this joystick repair service.
