iMac Boot Error & macOS Startup Repair
Is your Apple iMac no longer booting into macOS, showing a flashing folder with a question mark, displaying a prohibited symbol or becoming stuck during startup?
Our professional iMac boot error and macOS startup repair service is designed to diagnose and repair software-related startup problems that prevent a supported iMac from loading correctly.
The standard service costs £69.99. Where possible, our engineers will attempt to repair the existing macOS installation before considering a complete operating-system reinstallation.
Local iMac repairs are available from our Bolton repair centre, with a UK-wide repair service available for customers throughout the country.
Common iMac Boot Error Symptoms
An iMac that cannot start correctly can display a variety of symptoms depending on the cause of the fault.
Common problems include:
• Flashing folder with a question mark
• Prohibited symbol during startup
• iMac stuck on the Apple logo
• Progress bar freezing during startup
• macOS repeatedly restarting
• iMac booting into recovery instead of macOS
• Blank or grey screen during startup
• macOS failing after an update
• Corrupted operating-system files
• iMac unable to locate a valid startup disk
Some of these symptoms can be caused by software corruption, but similar problems can also occur when the internal HDD, SSD or another hardware component is failing.
Diagnosing an iMac That Will Not Boot
We do not automatically assume that every startup problem requires macOS to be erased and reinstalled.
Our engineers first assess the symptoms and determine whether the fault appears to originate from macOS, the startup disk or another area of the iMac.
Where appropriate, diagnostic checks can be carried out on the internal storage and operating system before deciding on the correct repair.
This is particularly important on older iMacs because a failing mechanical hard drive can produce symptoms that appear very similar to macOS corruption.
Repairing the Existing macOS Installation
Where practical, we will attempt to repair the existing operating system rather than immediately erase the iMac.
Depending on the fault, this may involve appropriate macOS recovery procedures, startup-volume checks, file-system repair and other software troubleshooting.
If the existing installation cannot be repaired reliably, we will advise whether a fresh macOS installation is the more appropriate solution.
What if the Hard Drive or SSD Has Failed?
A flashing folder or failed startup does not necessarily mean macOS itself is responsible.
If the iMac cannot reliably read its internal HDD or SSD, the storage device may require replacement before macOS can operate correctly.
Replacement HDDs, SSD upgrades and data recovery are separate services and are not included within the standard £69.99 software boot-repair price.
If testing identifies a hardware fault, we will explain what has been found and provide the appropriate repair price before carrying out additional chargeable work.
What Happens to My Data?
Where possible, we will take reasonable steps to preserve accessible customer data while investigating the startup fault.
However, data cannot be guaranteed during any repair involving operating-system corruption or a potentially failing storage device.
If your files are particularly important and are not backed up, please tell us before the repair is carried out.
If the storage device has failed and files need to be recovered separately, our data-recovery service may be required.
What Is Included in the £69.99 Service?
The standard iMac boot repair includes:
• Investigation of the reported macOS startup fault
• Appropriate macOS boot and recovery checks
• Software repair where technically possible
• Startup testing after repair
• Advice if an HDD, SSD or other hardware fault is identified
• 3-month warranty covering the original successful repair
Replacement hardware, specialist data recovery and unrelated faults are not included unless specifically agreed.

iMac Boot Error Repair FAQs
What does a flashing folder with a question mark mean on an iMac?
It normally means the iMac cannot locate or successfully start from a valid macOS system. This can be caused by operating-system corruption, a startup-disk problem or failed internal storage.
Can you repair macOS without deleting everything?
Where technically possible, we attempt to repair the existing installation first. A clean installation may be required if macOS is too badly corrupted to repair reliably.
Does a folder symbol mean my hard drive has failed?
Not necessarily. Both software corruption and storage failure can cause similar symptoms, which is why the fault should be diagnosed before replacing parts.
Is a replacement hard drive included in £69.99?
No. The £69.99 service covers the software-related boot repair. If the HDD or SSD has failed, we will advise you of the appropriate replacement cost.
Can you recover my files if the iMac will not boot?
Potentially. If the storage remains readable, files may still be accessible. A failed drive requiring a dedicated recovery attempt is covered by our separate data-recovery service.
Does the repair have a warranty?
A successful repair carries our standard 3-month warranty covering the original repaired fault.
