PS3 Yellow Light of Death Symptoms

The classic Yellow Light of Death sequence on an original PS3 is normally easy to recognise.

What Causes PS3 Yellow Light of Death?

YLOD should not be treated as a diagnosis of one particular component or automatically assumed to be a solder-related fault.

The original PlayStation 3 contains a complex motherboard incorporating the CELL processor, RSX graphics processor, power regulation circuitry, capacitors and many other components. A failure within different areas of the system can result in the console shutting down.

Possible causes can include faults associated with the RSX or CELL circuitry, power delivery, capacitors, motherboard components or other hardware failures.

NEC/TOKIN Capacitor Replacement – Optional £35

Some original PlayStation 3 motherboard faults can be associated with the NEC/TOKIN capacitor circuitry supplying the CELL and RSX processors.

However, NEC/TOKIN capacitors are not responsible for every Yellow Light of Death fault and replacing them should not be presented as a universal YLOD cure.

We therefore offer NEC/TOKIN replacement as an optional £35 addition where appropriate.

If selected, the normal £69.99 YLOD repair plus the £35 NEC/TOKIN option gives a total service price of £104.99.

Our diagnostic findings are used to determine whether the capacitor circuitry is relevant to the fault affecting your particular console.

Full Internal PS3 Service Included

When the YLOD repair is successful, we also carry out an internal service as part of the repair.

The original PlayStation 3 is now an ageing console and many systems contain substantial dust accumulation and deteriorated thermal paste.

The console is dismantled and the cooling system is cleaned before fresh thermal paste is applied as appropriate during reassembly.

This means the £69.99 service covers more than simply diagnosing the motherboard fault. The repaired console is serviced and tested before being returned.

What Happens If Your PS3 Cannot Be Repaired?

Unfortunately, not every Yellow Light of Death console can be economically or successfully repaired.

Some original PS3 consoles have severe processor, motherboard or previous-repair damage that prevents a successful repair.

If we are unable to successfully repair your PS3 under this service, we retain only a £20 diagnostic and engineering fee.

This covers the diagnostic work and engineering time involved in investigating and attempting the repair.

Previously Repaired PS3 Consoles

If your PS3 has previously undergone motherboard work, please let us know when sending the console to us.

Previous heat-gun work, uncontrolled heating, damaged PCB tracks, missing components or unsuccessful repair attempts can make diagnosis and repair considerably more difficult.

We will assess the condition of the motherboard as part of the diagnostic process and will contact you if previous damage prevents the normal repair from being carried out.

A successful PS3 Yellow Light of Death repair carried out under this service includes a 3-month warranty covering the repaired fault, beginning from the date of repair.

The warranty covers the repair we have carried out and does not provide general warranty coverage for unrelated faults elsewhere within an ageing PlayStation 3 console.
